WebbJ Whatman 1836 watermark. The engraving depicts an incredibly beautiful view of South Carolina's typical pristine wilderness during Audubon's time. A highly desirable print among the smaller images of the "Birds of America" published by John James Audubon. The cypress swamp background was painted by George Lehman, employed by Audubon. WebbYou must hold the print up to a light source and you should be able to see the words "J Whatman" and the date. In some cases the watermark will also include the words "Turkey Mill". Whatman made the paper that Havell used in printing. Whatman also supplied the excellent paper for Prideux John Selby's, Illustrations of British Ornithology.

James Whatman (papermaker) - Wikipedia

Whatman was the last child and only son of Mary and James Whatman. His father was a tanner and his son inherited the business in 1726 when his mother died. This Whatman continued the tanning business but in 1733 he was starting to make paper at the Old Mill in Hollingbourne. He assisted James Harris who built a new paper mill there.
