For the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara nations, the treaty defined a 12 million acre reservation stretching across present-day North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. WebArticle 9 of the treaty described it as a parcel of land west of Lake Pepin. The land remained largely unoccupied for two decades. However, the signing of US–Dakota land treaties in 1851 brought eager settler-colonists rushing into Minnesota Territory to claim Indigenous lands, even before the agreement had been ratified.
